Why would anyone move to Flint, Michigan??

A peek into the bowels of Flint.

People are usually shocked when I tell them I moved from Colorado to Flint, Michigan to go back to school.   Especially when my other choices were San Francisco or Salt Lake City.  I figured it was a trade-off.  Sure, I might get shot in Flint- but in Salt Lake, there is a very real possibility of waking up one morning, only to find out that I’m the 8th wife to some Utah farmer.   A lot of people survive being shot, and insurance will cover the bill.  The therapy bills I’d incur from the traumatizing experience of having to braid my hair every morning and wear pantaloons underneath my ankle length dresses would probably be too much for my wallet to handle.

There is also that fact that I’m sort of from Michigan.  I say sort of, because I’m not really from anywhere.  As I’ve spent more years in Michigan than any other location, I’ve decided this is where I’m from.  It’s a whole lot easier than explaining, “Well, I was born in Europe, when my dad was in the Army, but then he got out of the Army and we moved around, and then he got back in the Army and we moved around some more, and then he got back out of the Army and we moved to Michigan.”  Most just don’t care.  Including you.  You probably want the last 30 seconds of your life back.  Too bad.  They’re mine.

It all boiled down to money.  They make tuition cheap in Michigan- most likely to entice someone to move here. And of course there is the cost of living- Flint vs. San Francisco.   If I so desired (which I don’t), I could buy about five houses in Flint for the cost of 2 square feet in San Fran.  Granted, the houses might not have heat, electricity, or even windows- but that’s not the point.  There’s also the fact that I have my best friends living throughout the state. Oh, and the minor detail that school here would be about 4-6 months shorter than anywhere else.

For a plethora of reasons, I’ve come to believe I made a wise choice.

  1. Living in Flint, there are not many distractions (I’ve learned some quality ear plugs will block out the random gun shots, so I don’t count that as a distraction).  Few distractions equal more time actually studying. Studying generally leads to good grades. Good grades lead to not failing out of school which I’ve heard is a good thing.
  2. My gluteal muscles are getting a nice workout from speed walking to and from the hospital in an effort not to get mugged.
  3. Flint is…Uh..er… Maybe I should have used a different word than plethora, because I got nothing.

I’ll get to back to you on this list. Maybe somebody can help me out here??

My family is alot like the Jefferson’s, Except we haven’t been moving on “UP” per-say. Perhaps Moving On, or Moving Down? or just plain moving?

From the Nasty to Flint?

Hell 4 years of advanced technical higher education and my profit margins where higher in high school!

I was scanning the blogs in the comments for thebloggess.com and yours caught my eye… went to the archives and noticed this post! The title alone made me laugh… my sister is trying like hell to move her family out of flint… she’s gotta sell the house first. But you are right, cost of living and tuition is great, which is why they started their family there. I’m a Yooper, which you may or may not know… I’m from the other side of the bridge in the Upper Peninsula. It’s ok, but it’s not Flint… Good luck in your endeavors! Enjoyed reading your post. :)

I love the UP, eh? I would hazard to make a statement that the UP is about 395023x better than Flint. I wish your sister great luck and hope that all the best house selling fairies visit her. Because selling a house in Flint is HARD!!! glad you visited!

Hi! I’m also stopping by from #31DBBB! I live in the area… well Owosso really. But I’ve always lived close to and have gone to Flint often. It can be a scary place at times! Hopefully the city gets it’s shit together and turns the place around or it’ll be a ghost town!
